About

Thankyou for visiting my site. I hope you enjoy looking at my images.

I'm a landscape photographer based in Yorkshire. Since my youth I've been a frequent visitor to moorlands, mountains and coastlines, throughout the UK, and occasionally beyond. I am inspired by the beauty of our UK landscapes, and consider myself lucky to have some of the best a short drive from home.

My dad gave me my first camera when I was about 10, and ever since I've taken photographs when out walking. In my younger days I regularly took my camera with me into the hills. It wasn't however, until doing a City and Guilds Photography qualification, that I began to regard the medium as one I wished to develop (no pun intended!). In particular I enjoyed the landscape photography module, which gave me the opportunity to study the work of Ansel Adams and Charlie Waite.

After completing the course I treat myself to a Pentax medium format film system, began to take landscape photography seriously, and it's been a passion of mine ever since. I bought my first digital camera in 2008, when I considered the technology had matured enough to make the switch worthwhile. My original intention was to use a combination of both film and digital images, but the reality was digital won the day. The cost of film made it prohibitive. As a consequence the larger part of my portfolio is digital. Presently all the images here are digital, but I will be having some high resolution scans made of some of my best Fuji Velvia transparancies and they will be added at a later date.

The majority of my photography is in the Yorkshire Dales, parts of which are only an hour or so from home. I visit the Lake District a few times a year, and on occasion find myself on the Isle of Skye.
I have posted images from a trek in Nepal, and my aim is to visit more places with my camera, time and money allowing.

For anyone interested, kit wise I use Nikon equipment. Currently a D800e and D800, with 21, 24, 35, 50 and 85mm prime lenses, plus my trusty 70-200mm zoom lens. My filter system of choice is Lee.

My aim is to always get the image right in camera, and keep post processing to a minimum. My background in film helps, and I still use a handheld meter to measure exposure levels within a scene. Old habits die hard! Generally I find a modern DSLR more efficient to use than a film camera. I work with RAW files and use Lightroom and Photoshop CC for post processing colour work, and Nik Efex Pro 2 for my black and white images.

It is important to me to present an image that looks natural, and is truthful to the scene I chose to photograph.
